Magnetic mixing systems with scalability from lab to production

This case study demonstrates the scalability and performance of Avantor® Magnetic Mixer systems for solid–liquid mixing in biopharmaceutical buffer preparation. Using sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolution as a model system, mixing performance was assessed across volumes ranging from 10 L to 1500 L under both standard (1 M) and high-concentration (5 M) conditions. Results demonstrate consistent dissolution behavior when normalized by power density, with mixing times aligning closely across vessel sizes. Even under high-solids conditions, complete dissolution was achieved rapidly and predictably. These findings illustrate how magnetically driven, single-use mixing systems support reproducible scale-up from development through manufacturing while maintaining process control, sterility, and operational efficiency.
