Scientists in cell culture laboratories need methods to distinguish dead cells from live ones in order to accurately determine cellular counts and concentrations. Trypan Blue staining is the most commonly used agent for this purpose. However, it is not the best option for every situation. In particular, a fluorescence-based assay such as acridine orange/propidium iodide (AO/PI) is a superior alternative for samples where debris is present.
